DOUGLAS & GATES

SPRING 2023
ACTON, MASSACHUSETTS
ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHIC DESIGN
ACTON-BOXBOROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

Douglas & Gates is a school in the Acton-Boxborough school district that combines Douglas Elementary, Gates Elementary, and Huebner Preschool into one boardwalk campus.

I came onto the project during the design development and final artwork phases. All the wall graphics and signage had been approved by the school board through initial compositions that conveyed the intent of the graphics. I worked with my coworker to fully develop all these initial compositions into the final artwork to be printed and installed.

BRINGING THE WHOLE CAMPUS TOGETHER

This vinyl graphic is on a double-height wall in the heart of the school where the Douglas School and Gates School meet. The intent was to show all the native wildlife illustrations used throughout each of the schools coming together in this one mural to represent a unified campus.

REPRESENTING NATIVE ECOSYSTEMS

The Media Center is a double height space at the center of the Douglas and Gates schools on the second and third floors. It houses the library and small-scale learning areas for the whole campus. The lower half depicts the wetlands native to the site while the upper half displays the grasslands, tying the school to the native flora and fauna of the site.

LINKING EXERCISE & LEARNING

This piece was different from the others because nothing had been designed when I joined the project. Since it's by the gymnasium, the school wanted this graphic to focus on health and wellness. I had the creative freedom to design this graphic from scratch.
